The most useful part of a kitchen design visit involves no tape measure at all.
We ask, where possible, to turn up while somebody is actually making something. Not a performance. A cup of tea and the start of a dinner is plenty.
What we are watching for is the things you have stopped noticing. Which cupboard you open first. Where you put a hot pan down. Whether you have to close a drawer before you can open the dishwasher. How many times you cross the room to reach the bin.
People describe their kitchen problem as storage roughly nine times out of ten. Watching them cook, it is a layout problem roughly seven of those nine times. More cupboards in the wrong arrangement is an expensive way to keep the original problem.
It is also the part of the process nobody expects, and the part clients mention most often afterwards.
The island conversation
Almost everybody asks for one. In a room under about four metres wide, it is usually the wrong answer, and here is the number that decides it.
